I let out an audible "Phew" at the end of this chapter. What a relief!
I like that you have given us some backstory on Nick up front so we understand how damaged he is. Too often, I think, books leave an unpleasant character as a one-dimensional "bad guy" for too long. This happens a lot in middle grade where someone seems unredeemable until the end, and then there is this reveal about their past. I prefer to have characters whose nuance is developed along the way. Looking forward to next week!
Thanks for the kind words! Nick does walk such a fine line and continues to do so throughout the rest of the book. In fact, the next chapter . . . we'll talk about it soon. :) But I felt it was vital for us to at least understand Nick, even if we can't agree with all of his actions. Right or wrong, we can believe that he's trying to do what he thinks is right.
