I like that you have given us some backstory on Nick up front so we understand how damaged he is. Too often, I think, books leave an unpleasant character as a one-dimensional "bad guy" for too long. This happens a lot in middle grade where someone seems unredeemable until the end, and then there is this reveal about their past. I prefer to have characters whose nuance is developed along the way.
