I wrote a manuscript called Monster back in 2010 and sold it to a small but fairly well-known publisher. At the time, this company was producing several movies based on other books they published, and I think somebody in finance got nervous. Long story short, the publisher backed out of my deal even though we’d gone through almost the entire rounds of edits.
I’m proud of this book. I used ideas and themes that have since grown in popularity, and I often wonder what might have happened had it somehow found the light of day. I moved on to other books and projects, but I always regret that the book didn’t find a home.
I started this Substack about a year ago but haven’t found my stride. Life is busy, and it’s hard to generate content on a regular basis.
You’re smart. You see where I’m going with this. I have content without a platform and a platform without content. Hmmmmm. How do I solve these two completely unrelated problems? :)
Starting on June third, I will begin publishing this book in serial form, one chapter at a time. There are roughly 45 chapters, so weekly might be a nice cadence. We’ll get through the book in a little over ten months (somebody check my math, it’s been a while since college).
I will publish the book for free. Each week I’ll also record a short podcast that describes the writing process, some of the decisions I made, what I feel works, and where the chapter may fall short. These podcasts will be for subscribers, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions. If you’d like to see how the sausage is made, or discuss the writing process with the sausage maker, feel free to sign up!
As far as the book goes, I’d describe the genre as a contemporary speculative fiction thriller. It centers on a young man who . . . actually, I’m getting ahead of myself. Hit subscribe, and chapter one will be here soon.
Kindly,
Marion
I'm intrigued! Speculative fiction is my thing: I'm in. Out of curiosity, what will the chapter length be? I've seen a lot of debate on here about what makes a good-length instalment - which seems to be between 1k and 2k, but I'm tempted to think it's longer.
Looking forward to it.
